Xanthorrhoea, google grasstrees for some awesome specimens.
The reason I posted this is because they were commonly referred to as Blackboys. They can grow quite tall and the trunk and branches are black with grassy tufts at the top and long stick seed heads. Could be mistaken for a man standing off in the distance with a spear, maybe, but is the reason for the common name. Not sure when we stopped using that term, but they are now referred to mostly as grasstrees.
